Lab Report Analysis: Reflection

            While writing the rhetorical analysis for the three lab reports, I aimed to thoroughly assess each author’s method of presenting their research. In writing my analysis, I stumbled upon many issues with the criteria on which each paper should be evaluated. In the end my analysis was based on the structure and simplicity of the author’s writing. As a result, my paper demonstrated many strengths as well as various weaknesses.

The biggest weakness of the writing in this paper was the inefficient incorporation of the content that was being analyzed. While writing this paper, I was unable to find a way to take multiple quotes from each of the three reports and seamlessly add them to my analysis. Although I was able to provide at least one quote from each report, I would have liked to incorporate more of each report to give the reader a sense of each author’s writing. Other weaknesses included several grammatical errors that went unnoticed as well as the lack of an in-depth analysis on the author’s tone and stance instead of structure and simplicity.

The strengths of this paper are its thorough analysis of how each author chooses to structure and write their report, and its assessment of the author’s vocabulary used in writing their reports. The paper analyzes how each author breaks down the information that they obtained from their research and evaluates how audience friendly each structure is. While doing so, the paper looks at the type of vocabulary that the author uses and effectively determines if the author’s report would be suited to a range of audiences.

The motivation for writing this analysis was to provide readers with information regarding the effectiveness of each report in delivering its content to the audience. This audience may be researchers or students who are looking to learn more about the application of video gaming devices for scientific purposes; this paper’s role would be to brief the audience on what the best paper for that purpose would be.

While my paper had many strengths as well as weaknesses, this assignment has helped me realize the linguistic differences between each lab report and my paper, allowing me to employ these differences to bolster my paper. The act of drafting, revising, and peer reviewing have helped me to support a specific stance throughout my paper, creating a piece that would suit audience expectations. The use of three lab reports have helped me to practice using library resources and online databases, as well as helping to strengthen my source use practices. Overall this assignment has greatly improved my ability as a writer to analyze works and provide a stance.
